Black tea with milk (organic unsweetened nothing added soya for my taste) is a real comfort drink for me. But several components of my cuppa have caused me concern over the years.
Soya can be an oestrogen mimic – as I inject testosterone, I don’t see a problem with this but I know it worries other men. However I definitely don’t want any rainforests cleared to grow my soya so I make sure the beans are grown in Europe (Plamil are based in Folkestone and use EU beans).
Tetrapacks are a real energy using and recycling problem. I wish someone would start selling soya milk in truly re-usable glass bottles. Hint, hint! My council have a waste sorter and say they recycle tetrapacks but so much CO2 is produced in making them and then taking them apart…
Then tea bags…. when did someone think it was a good idea to put plastic in tea bags. I realised there was a problem a couple of years ago when my composted tea bags wouldn’t compost. My flower beds are now full of several year old indestructible tea bags…. Then I realised I could buy loose tea!! Hurrah! It took me long enough to figure that one out. It also took a while for me to find some of my favorite teas in loose but now I know where to get decaffinated black tea, Russian Caravan and Rooibos. I have a little blue teapot with reusable filter and the tea is so much nicer!
